For some lessons (but by no means all) my plan is to start providing brief notes at the foot of the opening slides.  There’s no grand purpose behind doing so: just thought it might be a good way of helping to **frame** student thinking.  For example, there’s a tendency for students to believe that *A Christmas Carol *is a typically gothic novel – they expect it to be *just* frightening. However, as Lyn Pykett highlights in her essay ‘Sensation and the Fantastic in the Victorian Novel’, that’s not the case…
