Click on the button above to access a booklet containing fourteen paintings that can be linked to different texts from the GCSE English Literature curriculum.  I made the resource to use as a starting point for wider discussions on the presentation of key themes.

For example, *Landscape with the Fall of Icarus*, by Pieter Bruegel the Elder (above), vividly illustrates of the dangers of pride and ambition, and could therefore be linked to *Jekyll and Hyde* or *Frankenstein*.  I’ve made brief notes at the foot of each painting.

Here’s a full list of everything I’ve included:

1. **Sethos I Before Horus**, by Unknown Artist (c.1280 BCE)
2. **Mona Lisa**, by Leonardo da Vinci (1503)
3. **Landscape with the Fall of Icarus**, by Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1558)
4. **Experiment with a Bird in an Air Pump**, by Joseph Wright of Derby (1768)
5. **Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog**, by Caspar David Friedrich (1818)
6. **Anatomical Pieces**, by Théodore Géricault (1818-20)
7. **Norwegian Mountain Landscape**, by Johan Cristian Dahl (1819)
8. **The City**, by August Strindberg (1903)
9. **Metropolis**, by George Grosz (1916-17)
10. **Invasion Pattern, Normandy**, by Eric Aldwinckle (1945)
11. **Izzy Orts**, by Edward Burra (1955)
12. **Painting 150**, by Manolo Millares (1961)
13. **War**, by Marc Chagall (1964-66)
14. **View of Madrid from Torres Blancas**, by Edward Burra (1976-82)

Hope the resource is useful –
