How I teach the first three lessons of Romeo and Juliet | KS3 Teaching Resources

Written by Douglas Wise | 7 January, 2023

A short post on how I’m planning to teach the first three lessons on Romeo and Juliet to my Year 9 group. I’m using a booklet of extracts to teach the play. You can access it here, where you’ll also find a link to a collection of wider reading articles.

Lesson 1: Context

The first lesson is about reflecting on aspects of the sixteenth century (civil disorder, the role of honour, expectations of wives and daughters) and then drawing parallels with today.

The teaching resource for lesson 1 is based on information from the British Library website. You can download it here: Romeo and Juliet Context Overview

Lesson 2: Prologue

The second lesson is about exploring two different interpretations of the Prologue: one from the National Theatre and one from the Globe

Lesson 3: Act 1, Scene 1

The third lesson is on the presentation of Romeo, framed by a focus on the tradition of courtly love and the tensions that emerged in customs of courtship and marriage.

Once again, the resource for Lesson 3 is based on information from the British Library website. You can access it here: Romeo and Juliet Context

You can find all my Romeo and Juliet teaching resources here.

Cheers –

Doug
