Vocabulary Booklet: Commonly Confused and Similar Words

Written by Douglas Wise | 10 January, 2021

Click on the link above to access a booklet of 26 commonly confused and similar words.

The booklet isn’t meant to be exhaustive – there’s only one word for each letter of the alphabet – it’s simply been designed to generate good quality thinking and debate around some of the knottier aspects of the English language.  Ideally, it’ll foster curiosity and can obviously be added to and amended depending on how things go.

In terms of using it, there are three basic steps…

  1. Ask students to define the two words and discuss
  2. Reveal the actual definitions and discuss
  3. Get students to write out two sentences – one with each word in – and discuss

Probably works best as a five(ish) minute starter task at the beginning of GCSE English Language lessons etc.

Hope it’s useful –

Doug
