Click on the button above to download a booklet of short fiction extracts to read and explore. All of them have been recently published and you’ll see that I’ve used a mixture of relatively new and more established authors. List below…

  1. For No Mortal Creature, by Keshe Chow
  2. Return of the Spider, by James Patterson
  3. What Have They Done to Liza McLean?, by Amy Doak
  4. Wednesday: A Novelisation of Season One
  5. Silvercloak, by L. K. Steven
  6. Wild Horses, by Jennifer Scoullar

Each of the worksheets is designed to be delivered in a single lesson. The tasks require students to make inferences and define potentially unfamiliar words; I’ve also included a creative writing task at the end. Snips below…

I originally put the booklet together as part of a wider effort to help students explore a range of literary styles with a view preparing them for the creative writing task on the GCSE English Language Paper 1 exam. However, it’d work just as well at KS3 or as work for a cover lesson.

It should be easy to adapt. Hope it’s useful –

Doug
