The booklet is formed of twenty short extracts from the novels listed below:

  2. To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee
  3. Anita and Me, by Meera Syal
  4. Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, by Louis de Bernières
  5. The Reluctant Fundamentalist, by Mohsin Hamid
  6. Norwegian Wood, by Haruki Murakami
  7. As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning, by Laurie Lee
  8. Mrs Dalloway, by Virginia Woolf
  9. The Line of Beauty, by Alan Hollinghurst
  10.  The Kite Runner, by Khalid Hosseini
  11. American Gods, by Neil Gaiman
  12. Memento Mori, by Muriel Spark
  13. The End of the Affair, by Graham Greene
  14. Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha, by Roddy Doyle
  15. Spies, by Michael Frayn
  16. Vernon God Little, by DBC Pierre
  17. High-Rise, by J. G. Ballard
  18. White Teeth, by Zadie Smith
  19. Wide Sargasso Sea, by Jean Rhys
  20. The Buddha of Suburbia, by Hanif Kureish
There are five basic questions for each extract. Good stuff, perhaps, for GCSE English Language work – for starter activities and so on. Hopefully, the booklet will provide students with a ‘snapshot’ of some really interesting and diverse literary fiction that they might want to discuss and pursue.

Feedback always welcome –
